Here I am, a full month out from E3 and only now getting the motivation to write up my thoughts of the Sony Press Conference. Part of that is laziness, but a bigger part of that is a lack of interest in where Sony seems to be taking the PS3. The show had a few interesting things, but most of the focus was put on either 3D technology (on a TV with glasses) or with motion control. I just don’t care about either, at all, so even though I appreciate the advancement in tech, I have no intention of ever using it.

I don’t use my Wii very often at all. It’s been collecting dust for about a year, because I don’t care for mini-games or non-games and I have no interest in playing anything in standard def with a Wiimote than I can play in HD with a controller on my XBOX 360 or PS3. Even games that I want to play, like Punch Out, I don’t feel are worth the full price. So it was strange that of all three press conferences, I think that Nintendo was the most impressive, and much of that was due to exciting games on the Wii. Add in a new handheld launch and it sealed the deal.

I like Microsoft’s style for these press events. They don’t really spend time with charts and graphs. Instead, they show you games and demos, most of which are only available on their console. I think it makes for a much more entertaining show. They still have a lot of stupid banter and people “acting” while they demo games, which makes me cringe, but what can you do? This year, everything had pretty much leaked ahead of time, and most of the stuff we knew about anyway, but were just getting a chance to see.
They started with the hardcore stuff:

Q: Jesus, it’s already the end of 2009, why are you only getting around to 2008’s games?

Last up for the big three conferences this year was Sony. They had a tough act to follow after their main competitor, Microsoft, had such a jam-packing showing. For the most part, they delivered, with impressive demos for some big games and what would have been some big announcements. Unfortunately, a lot of their stuff got leaked ahead of time, something that they made light of at the beginning of the presentation.
